Know your computer
It is important for you to know your computer at least the basics. You’ll find this handy when you want to purchase new programs or hardware like printers. It will save you time and money in having to return items that won’t work with it.
Unless you have a great techo memory, I recommend making a photocopy of the packing slip of your computer and then tucking it away in the corner of your purse or billfold. Then you can refer to the sheet or show it to a salesperson if you are wondering if something will work with your computer.
Can’t find the packing slip? Then there are certain things you will need to find out and then jot down on a piece of paper:
1. Processor type/speed and amount of RAM (memory) These can be found in the control panel under the system icon.
2. Hard-drive space. Double-click on the “My Computer” icon and then right-click on the main drive (Usually “C”). It will bring up a pie chart showing the drive and used and unused space.
3. Video Card. With no programs open, right-click on your computer screen and select properties. You can find out what your video capabilities are there.
4. Check your computer and find out how many USB ports you have.
