What is USB?

While USB has been around for some time now, many people still do not know what it is.

USB is short for Universal Serial Bus. It sounds pretty technical, but in reality is very simple - and meant to simplify computing.

A USB plug-in port is a place for connecting things to your computer. The idea behind it is to create one type of connection for all devices - printers, cameras, scanners and the like.

If your computer has a USB port, you can purchase USB devices with reasonable assurance they will connect to your computer relatively easy. One word of warning: you still need to make sure your computer will meet the rest of the device's requirements.

So are there other advantages to USB? You bet. USB transfers information from your computer to devices at a much higher rate of speed than the old printer (serial) cable. This makes things like printing much faster. And there is a newer version - USB 2.0 that is even speedier.

Other features include the ability to connect a device to your computer without turning it off and on. This is a real advantage if you've just taken some digital pictures and want to plug your camera into the computer.

IF you haven't had experience with USB yet it will only be a matter of time before you will.
